Every month I get the pleasure of choosing a new single origin coffee to purchase and roast for our Origin Select program! It’s exciting to be able to choose where in the world our “travels” will take us next, though at times the amount of options can be daunting! For now we rely on relationships with reputable stateside green coffee importers who maintain direct relationships with the folks at origin, and ensure that farmers are being paid TOP DOLLAR for the product they are exporting.
Our Origin Select coffee this month comes from the Morazan region of El Salvador. This coffee has a creamy body, medium acidity, and caramelized sugar sweetness. We decided on a medium roast profile this month, as our roasting team felt that the extra time brought out more of the characteristics we were looking for in this particular bean.
Morazan, an area of ancient forests, has a long history of coffee cultivation. In the indigenous language spoken there, “Lenca” means “The Land of Abundant Water.” The bounty of fresh water from the El Rio Grande de San Miguel, the fertile land and the high altitudes create “cloud forests,” which protect the plants from extreme weather.
The community in Lenca is working to maintain forest-shade tree growth and fend off encroaching deforestation by growing coffees that command a higher premium.
We hope you will enjoy this new selection in our ongoing Origin Select series of coffees that explores different coffee growing regions, farms, and processes. We roast our Origin Select series in-house, typically choosing coffees that are in-season, guaranteeing you get the freshest coffee available. Every new month features a new origin, so you can travel the world with us, one cup at a time with our Origin Select of the Month Club!
