El Salvador Lenca: Featured Origin Select Coffee

Every month I get the pleasure of choosing a new single origin coffee to purchase and roast for our Origin Select program! It’s exciting to be able to choose where in the world our “travels” will take us next, though at times the amount of options can be daunting! For now we rely on relationships with reputable stateside green coffee importers who maintain direct relationships with the folks at origin, and ensure that farmers are being paid TOP DOLLAR for the product they are exporting. 

Our Origin Selectcoffee this monthcomes from the Morazan region of El Salvador. This coffee has a creamy body, medium acidity, and caramelized sugar sweetness. We decided on a medium roast profile this month, as our roasting team felt that the extra time brought out more of the characteristics we were looking for in this particular bean.  

Morazan, an area of ancient forests, has a long history of coffee cultivation. In the indigenous language spoken there, “Lenca” means “The Land of Abundant Water.” The bounty of fresh water from the El Rio Grande de San Miguel, the fertile land and the high altitudes create “cloud forests,” which protect the plants from extreme weather. 

The community in Lenca is working to maintain forest-shade tree growth and fend off encroaching deforestation by growing coffees that command a higher premium.
