Patio Bonito is a hardworking, innovative family-run farm in Caldono, a town located in the Cauca Department in the southwestern region of Colombia. Founder Carlos Arturo Trujillo has farmed coffee for almost 50 years, and he reflects, “It has been a long road, but in the end, it is very satisfactory.”
Carlos is assisted by his daughter, Paola Trujillo, who has been especially integral in perfecting the farm’s fermentation process. Paola spent many years as a coffee cupper and buyer in Nariño and Huila for an exporting company. Since returning to the farm in 2022, she has innovated how the family processes their washed and natural coffees, including thermal shock and anaerobic modulations.

Patio Bonito’s has 9 hectares planted with coffee: roughly 47,000 trees across 13 varieties, including Pink Bourbon, featured in this offering. The family’s attention to detail extends to every aspect of the farm, and all operations are grounded in three core values: food security, soil conservation and management, and coffee cultivation. Their mission is “to provide alternatives and training to farmers and students on the management, conservation, and exploration of natural resources and the environment,” and their philosophy is, “The best legacy we can leave to our children is: love, knowledge, and a planet in which to live.”
The Pink Bourbon is a variety cultivated from the hybridization of Red and Yellow Bourbon. It is very rare, and it is difficult to produce with consistency. It was also intentionally processed using anaerobic fermentation, in which freshly harvested cherries are sealed in a container for a period of time, often intensifying fruit and acidity with a slight increase in body. In the cup, expect strong cooked cranberry, dried apple, and lavender, with boozy acidity and candy-like sweetness.

Cauca sits in central-western Colombia, stretching from the Western Cordillera to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean winds and elevation make it one of the country’s coolest regions, and its coffee is grown mostly by indigenous and Afro-descendant communities.
